Having just got my bike stolen, I thought it a good idea to look at the practice of insurance in poker, its implication and effects, and when and why you should take it or give it. The practice of offering insurance is prevalent in nearly all live cash games, and can enable players to offset some of their risk when in all in situations, although it has important downsides that need to be considered.

My goal in writing is to alert new players to some traps awaiting them. I expect that most players will lose a little when getting started unless they are initially much better than I was. But new players can learn and change their situations, perhaps more quickly than they expect.
