Today is DYK Day. That stands for Did You Know
Day, so named in an almost forgotten resolution that passed both houses
of Congress in 1940. The idea was that Americans could learn a great
deal about many things if their fellow citizens shared their knowledge.
Let's think together. Today's column is going to
be a little tougher on our brains than most. But, it won't hurt much,
and we can use the exercise. What we're going to think about is
important, and I want to make sure that we understand.
As you know, I put a lot of emphasis on poker
psychology. Sure, I'm the guy responsible for a lot of those poker
statistics out there. To be truthful, when twice-world-champion Doyle
Brunson's bible, Super/System - A Course In Power Poker, was in the
planning, I sat in a room for weeks calculating the 50 tables for the
statistics section. Just me, a pen, a notepad, and a calculator. No
computers on my desktop back then in 1976.
We talk a lot about "advertising" in poker. Ten years ago, in Poker
Player newspaper, I wrote a column defining one of my approaches to
maximizing profit through the use of advertising. Before you read it,
you need to know that it probably is not an approach that you should
adopt.
