Power Rankings: Katchalov Reclaims the Top Spot

Posted by Lasse Hamar 23/12/11

The BLUFF/ESPN Power Rankings saw a major shake up this week with fourteen of the top twenty players in the list shifting rank since our last update.  The Power Rankings seek to evaluate players’ work over an extended period of time, extending 24 months.

With several players’ two year old scores no longer counting towards their total and several players’ scores from last December earning only half points now, there is a whole new group rising to the top.

Eugene Katchalov ascended to the top spot thanks to his in the money finish at WPT Prague, but also because the previous leader in the ranks, Matt Waxman, now only earns half points for his WSOPC Ring victory from last December’s Atlantic City event, as it is now over a year old.  Bertrand Grospellier also benefited from Waxman’s loss.  The Frenchman moved from fourth to third in the ranks, while Jason Mercier and Marvin Rettenmaier retained their spots in fourth and fifth respectively.

The biggest jump of the period belongs to Vanessa Selbst.  Her third place showing at the WPT’s Five Diamond Main Event catapulted her from 18th place all the way to ninth.  Selbst showed the biggest gains over the past two week, while 2009 WPT Five Diamond final tablists Steve O’Dwyer and Shawn Buchanan experienced the biggest drops in the ranks, as their Five Diamond scores no longer qualified for Power Rankings points.  Buchanan fell from eighth to 12th in the list, while O’Dwyer dropped five spots from 14th to 19th.  Look for O’Dwyer to bounce right back in our next edition though, as his runner-up finish at WPT Venice has yet to be added to his Power Rankings score.

The only new entry in the ranks this week is Chris Moorman, who comes in at 18th place.  Roberto Romanello, who was previously ranked 20th, dropped out of the ranks since our last update.
