EPT: Andrulis, Ma, Payan Lead Day 1A in Deauville

The European Poker Tour is back from its Caribbean vacation with its annual visit to Deauville, France.  The annual stop drew 891 players last season and is on pace to draw a similar crowd this time around.  Day 1A of the €5,300 buy-in event drew 339 players and tournament officials told the PokerStars Blog they expect nearly twice that many players for Day 1B on Wednesday.

While the big crowds will be at the Casino de Deauville on Wednesday, there were still plenty of notables in the Day 1A crowd, including Arnaud Matter, Martin Jacobson, Kara Scott, James Dempsey, Ruben Visser, Shaun Deeb, last year’s Deauville runner-up Max Heinzelmann, and Jonathan Duhamel.

Duhamel was one of 118 players to hit the rail over the course of Day 1A action, as were Deeb, Heinzelmann, and Jacobson.  The big names struggled, while relative unknowns thrived.  The end of day chip leader was Kristijonas Andrulis, who bagged up 162,600 chips from the 30,000 chip starting stack.  Phillippe Ma is right behind him in the ranks with 162,200.  WSOP bracelet winner and French pro Elie Payan rounds out the top three with 141,800.

Other notables who survived the day include Kevin Candersmissen, Anton Ionel, Marcin Horecki, Visser, Scott, and Dempsey.

Here are the top ten chip counts from the end of Day 1A of EPT Deauville:

1. Kristijonas Andrulis – 162,600
2. Phillippe Ma – 162,200
3. Elie Payan – 141,800
4. Julien Claudepierre – 128,200

10. Jean Marc Rigail – 97,400
